This underpins everything we do at Blackheath High School. The school’s empowering, feminist culture means the students are more likely to take intellectual risks, adopt leading, active roles and be less inclined to conform to gender stereotypes.” With unique facilities on their doorstep the students From outdoor teaching to the Positive Wellness program, well-being is at the heart of Blackheath High School. The weather was definitely in their favour with wall to wall blue sky as the students took turns in the skies with a qualified pilot who let each girl take the controls. Tethers were disconnected and the unbridled joy of gliding peacefully above the Surrey countryside became a once in a lifetime experience for all. Isha Kamara, one of the students who flew that day described her experience:“At first I was very scared about being inside the glider and controlling it. However, after being through the instructions and safety procedures I felt very confident in myself which led me to volunteer to be the first to fly. Being in the air was amazing. The glider is very sensitive so when being in control I had to concentrate and look around me to see if the wings were levelled.” The annual event is subsidised by the Worshipful Company of Dyers who continue to give generously to the school.
